I have never learnt Chinese before, but I am interested to pick up the language.

That's great! Life-long learning is commendable; we provide tutors who can teach from basics. Most beginners often start off with conversational Mandarin classes, with some reading/writing taught. We recommend that you take up a 3-month course (see our tips on learning a new language here) to reap the most out of your learning.

As these classes are not bound by any curriculum requirements (unlike PSLE, or O Levels), the client and the tutor usually work together to formulate a lesson plan. It could be centered around work requirements (how to write an email, how to hold a meeting with Chinese-speaking colleagues, etc), or just casual conversation skills (day-to-day greetings, current affairs, chit-chat topics, etc).

Some clients already have basic skills and want to improve further; intermediate classes are also available.

Do tutors provide materials or notes for tuition?

It depends. Most academic classes will involve assessment books; parents usually purchase them, or tutors can recommend suitable ones based on the child's current standards and the parents reimburse. The more experienced tutors may provide worksheets, exam papers, sample essays, 好词好句 if they have.

Why is it so difficult to do well in Chinese?

For students who struggle with Mother Tongue (or Chinese in this case), common reasons are that, they have had a limited exposure to it, coming from an English-speaking family, or the way it was taught/introduced to the child was unengaging or not fun enough to stimulate an interest in it.
