Activities for the Holidays

To all students and parents, congratulations for getting through the tough exam period! Take a well-deserved break now. Here are some recommended activities for you to do in this period!

(1) Spend some quality time with your family and friends
Have you been neglecting your family and friends as you prepare for the exams? Now that exams are over, spend some time with them and reconnect over some outdoor activities.
East Coast Park offers a myriad of fun activities. You can opt for a picnic, kite-flying, swimming, inline skating, or cycling by the beach. The four-seater quad bike offers a leisurely cycle with your loved ones around East Coast Park. It is a wonderful place for you to have a group outing and a perfect spot to watch the sunset!

(2) Volunteer
How about doing something meaningful during the holidays? Be a volunteer and make an impact on the community. There are plenty of volunteer work activities available in Singapore. You can either visit an old folks home, home for the disabled or participate in litter picking activities at the beach or around your neighbourhood.

If you are looking for an organisation to join, Foodbank (www.foodbank.sg/) could be one of your option. As a volunteer, you can help to sort and pack the food donations at their warehouse for the less fortunate, and get to know more about hunger and food wastage issues in Singapore.

(3) Read books
Dr. Seuss once said, “The more you read, the more things you know. The more you learn, the more places you’ll go.”

Pop over to a nearby public library to check out the books available. Alternatively, you can download e-books from the NLB website, or online stores. We recommend “The Diary of Anne Frank”, “Harry Potter series”, “The Catcher in the Rye”, “Percy Jackson series”. Find one that suits your taste!

(4) Pick up a skill or a hobby

Mastering a new skill is good for personal development. It could be learning a new language, baking, or any skills that you are interested to learn. Do you have a career path in mind? If you do, this is the best time for you to develop skills relevant to the industry. However, if you are still finding your passion and career goal, you could still learn these skills to expand your knowledge base and add value to yourself. These skills will come in handy in the future. Below are some skills that you can consider:

  • Public speaking
  • Learn to play a new instrument
  • Cooking
  • Pick up artistic skills or crafts like sketching, crochet
  • Learn a new sport like rock climbing, kayaking, self-defense
  • Make a good video (Shoot and edit a video)
  • Basic First Aid

(5) Find a seasonal / temporary job

Curious of how work life is different from school? This is a good opportunity for you to be exposed to work life. You could start with searching for an industry that you are interested to explore, take up a few part time jobs relevant to the industry. If you enjoy working in a specific field, you should contemplate taking it as a full-time job in the future. Remember, it’s not about the pay but it’s about the learning experience. These work experience will be valuable in the future, when you enter the workforce.

(6) Farm Visit

Do you know that Singapore has its own share of farms? Check out some of the animal farms scattered around Singapore. Some of them have a range of outdoor activities, such as animal feeding and tours. If you are an animal lover, don't miss out. During the visit, you would have the chance to get up close with the animals, and enjoy the tranquil surroundings while feeding the animals.

We suggest Jurong Frog Farm, located in Lim Chu Kang area. It is the only frog farm in Singapore, which might be closing the business in 2019. Before you lose the opportunity of visiting a frog farm, you should make a trip down to the farm.

(7) Handmade gifts for parents & friends

What’s more special than handmade gifts? I am sure everyone loves to receive a handmade gift from someone loved. Take this break to show some love and appreciation to your cherished ones, by making some handmade/personalized gifts for them. Grab some raw materials from Daiso, Carousell, Popular, and use your creativity! If you are running out of ideas, we have some recommendations here for you.

  • Handmade cards for upcoming Christmas, Birthdays, Valentine's, Friendship Day, and others!
  • DIY a terrarium
  • Knit a cardigan
  • Crochet coasters, mini baskets
  • Scrapbooking
