How to Ensure a Conducive Tuition for Your Child

Many parents have actually lamented about having engaged tutors who are not suitable for their children, or they may have issues with tutors not focusing their attention on the students' work during tuition. At Start Tuition Agency, we strive to match the most suitable tutor for parents' requirements in order to minimise these problems. However, parents can follow these tips to further ensure that their children can enjoy tuition in a more fruitful way, and also to ensure the safety of the students.

1) Verify tutor's credentials on the 1st lesson:
Due to personal data protection, some tutors are unwilling to provide their documents (especially identification papers such as NRIC and MOE Teacher’s Pass) to tuition agencies. However, parents can request to see their documents and identification papers to verify their credentials. This is to ensure that the tutors have the proper experience and capabilities for the tuition.

2) Arranging tuition to be in a more open area:
Do try to arrange the tuition to be conducted in a more open area like the living room, or at the very least, leave the room door open if tuition is conducted in an enclosed room (like the student’s room). This can allow both the student and the tutor to be confident that the tuition is conducted in a professional way, leaving less room for any disputes

3) Presence of an adult family member:
Ultimately, the tutor is still very much a stranger and having an adult family member can safeguard the safety of both the student and the house.

4) Monitoring the number of lessons:
Some parents may feel that their children should take on greater responsibility and be more independent, so they will leave it to their children to arrange lessons with tutors themselves. This is highly commendable but the students may not have the experience yet to monitor the number of lessons conducted. As such, there may be problems arising especially when it comes to settling tuition fees. Hence, parents monitor the lessons conducted and keep a record so as to reduce the possibility of any issues arising.

5) Getting feedback from student:
Most parents will ask feedbacks from tutors after lessons, but they should also get feedbacks from their children as well. It is true that feedback from tutors can be used to further improve students’ performance, but getting feedback from students also helps to find out if there is any way to further increase the teaching effectiveness during lessons. More importantly, any unhappiness or disputes can be detected during the initial lessons and proactive measures can be implemented to correct the situation.

With these tips, parents can help to create a better tuition environment and with more interaction with their children, better relationship between parents and children can be fostered.
